Applying Social Enterprise Methodology to International Development

Third in the Social Enterprise in International Development Paper Series

This final paper of the Social Enterprise in International Development Paper Series endeavors to overlay current development systems and practices with an evolving methodology for developing high performance social enterprises. The Four Lenses Strategic Framework developed by Virtue Ventures offers a point of engagement around which practitioners, academics, donors, and other players in the social enterprise sphere might move toward developing common social enterprise methodologies, best practices, and performance parameters for successful social enterprises.

By applying this framework to the international development sector, the authors hope to 1) identify the ways in which the methodologies underlying social enterprise and international development merge and differ and 2) to inform the design and understanding of social enterprise so that it may be used intentionally to enhance, augment, complement, or replace conventional international development programs, systems, and institutions.
